Approved Screening Device (ASD) vs Approved Instrument (AI)

The Approved Screening Device is also known as the ASD or Roadside Test. The ASD result is not used as evidence of guilt of an illegal blood-alcohol level. The ASD (road-side test) is a tool akin to the officer's ability to observe blood shot eyes, odour of alcohol from a driver's breath, or slurred speech. These observations can support further investigation of a driver.

The ASD is a screening device, and not an evidentiary breath testing device. The evidentiary breath testing machine is known as the Approved Instrument (AI). In Ontario Ontario, Canada, today, the Approved Instrument is the Intoxilyzer 8000C.

The Approved Instrument can give results that are admissible in court as Crown evidence supporting a finding that an accused person is guilty.
